The biggest test in Southside’s season comes Friday night when second-ranked and defending Class 3A state champion St. James School in Montgomery invades Panther Stadium.

A St. James win means the Panthers (2-1, 1-1) will finish third or fourth in the Region 3, Class 3A playoff race.

With quarterback MJ Reese and receivers Erick Smith and Derick Smith, the game will likely be a high-scoring contest.

“St. James is the defending state champions, we have to minimize our mistakes, stay disciplined, and bring maximum effort for four quarters,” Panthers head coach Charles Moody Jr. said.

Keith at Marengo: The Bears (3-1, 1-1) continue to establish themselves in region 3, 1A at the right time.

“Marengo is big, fast and physical,” Bears head coach Anthony Lumpkin said.

Quarterback Aveon Young and running back Sederreion Reuben continue to establish themselves as senior leaders. Young ran for three touchdowns against University Charter last week.

Wilcox Academy at Morgan Academy: The Senators (1-3) try to end a two-game losing streak, hosting Wilcox Academy (4-1) at Morgan Stadium.

“They are going to be another tough opponent,” Senators coach Danny Raines said. “They have some really good athletes. Hopefully, we can have a good week in getting ready for them. We will have to have a good night.”

One bright spot for Morgan Academy is quarterback Caden Tellier and wide receiver Speedie Pernell forming a solid pass-and-catch combination.

Greenville at Selma: The Saints (0-4, 0-2) host Greenville in a non-Region contest at Memorial Stadium, searching for their first win of 2023.

Selma continues to struggle on both sides of the ball, scoring only two touchdowns in four games. If the Saints’ offensive line opens up hole, scoring opportunities will come for Omari Smith.

Dallas County at Holt: The Hornets (0-3, 0-2) travel to face the Ironmen at Woody Clements Stadium.  Holt was the only team Dallas County beat last year.

Quarterback Kodell Sharp continues to shine for the Hornets, connecting with different targets to score points.

Southern Prep at Meadowview Christian School: The Trojans (0-4) return home to Wadsen Field for an 8-man showdown. Quarterback Alex Johnson and running back Trent Ballard continue to make plays for MCS.
