A hard-hitting defense and running attack lifted Keith High to a 7-3 victory over Bullock County on Friday at J.V. Caldwell Stadium.

Running back Saderrion Reuben ran for 85 yards and made the game-clinching interception to lead the Bears (1-0).

“That win was for my team, my team helped me win this game,” Reuben said proudly after the game.

Keith head coach Anthony Lumpkin praised his squad for their effort against the Hornets, who won last year’s meeting.

“It was an ugly win,” Lumpkin said. “Reuben is on his way. We were glad to get the win, but we’ve got a lot of work to do.”

Kickoff changed from 7 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. because of the heat and the late start didn’t affect either team.

Bullock County (0-1) dominated the first half, leading 3-0 after one quarter.

The Hornets had other chances to score but missed field goal attempts of 35- and 37-yards. They also had a touchdown called back because of penalty.

Once Malcolm Jones scored on a two-yard TD run in the second quarter, that was all Keith needed to prevail.

The Hornets were driving down the field for a game-winning drive, but Reuben’s interception sealed the game.
