John R. Pendergrass died on August 15, 2023, at age 90. He is preceded in death by his parents, Robert (Bob) and Icie Pendergrass, his sister, Margaret Ann Doiel, and grandson Joseph. He is survived by his children, John Cecil, Albert, Faye, and Robert, his former wife Polly Ehrensperger of Selma, as well as five grandchildren. John was best friends with Cecil Jackson, Jr. in Selma and folks would say, “If you see one coming, you’ll see the other.” He was also life-long friends with Ronnie and Donnie Coffee, James Hooper, Leo Friday, Dicky Norton, and Joe Knight, all from Selma. John was a Marine, a salesman for an IBM company, and after earning a graduate degree in Criminology at UAB, an analyst at Birmingham Police Dept. and a director with Jefferson County, AL. He retired to Foley, AL, then moved to Portland, OR when his health declined to be closer to family. A memorial is being planned.
