Selma City Schools xSel program is off and running but with the early let-out times at the schools parents will not have to worry about their kids while they are at work due to a partnership between the school district and the Selma YMCA.

The aftercare program allows the students who are a part of the xSel program to come over to the YMCA and enjoy the facility while their parents are still at work. YMCA marketing director Austin Williams said that this partnership will take the stress off of the kids and the parents this summer.

The YMCA of Selma-Dallas County and the Selma City School District have partnered again for the third year in a row to offer Summer Learning After-school Activities at the YMCA for youth enrolled in the xSEL Summer Learning Program, Williams said. “Monday-Thursday from 2:30 pm-4:30 pm the kids are transported from their schools to the YMCA where they enjoy snacks, engage in recreational activities, make new friends, and participate in various art projects.”

Williams and the staff at the Y allow the students to get some energy out in a fun way before they come home during the summer after the Summer Learning Program.

“As the kids are in class during the day learning, the Y provides the recreational and fun activities for the kids to get some energy out in a safe and uplifting environment,” Williams said.

Having this partnership is important to the kids according to Williams because it allows them to be in a safe and fun environment.

“We, at the Y, feel this is an important program to offer for a few reasons. Many parents work during the summer and have difficulty finding childcare for the summer months,” Williams said. “This is where the Y has been able to step in and provide a safe, fun, and exciting program to not only fill the youth with positive outlets but also to help the parents out during summer.”
