Former Selma Mayor George Evans impacted so many lives before his untimely passing on May 15. One of the groups that he impacted the most was the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. For over 50 years Evans was a brother in the Fraternity and now his brothers are wanting to give back in a way to continue to honor Evans for years to come. During the Celebration of Life Service on Monday Vice President Judge Donavon McGuire said that the Delta Phi Lambda chapter will name a scholarship in the name of Mayor Evans for a graduating senior in Dallas County that is going to major in education.

“Every year our chapter gives out various scholarships,” Chapter member and Selma City Council President Billy Young said. “We have one scholarship that’s named after one of our founders John E. Taylor. We have another scholarship that’s named after Randell Miller. Now, George Evans joins those ranks of men that we now give a scholarship in honor of.”

Evans was a big part of the chapter back in the 80s and played a vital role in the chapter all the way up until his passing.

“George Evans was a major part of our chapter,” Young said. “The fact that he was a 50-year brother, for over 50 years he served as a member of our chapter. He had various roles. He served as president a couple of times. He also served as vice president and even helped host the Alpha district conference here in Selma back in the 80s. That was a huge thing where Alphas from all over Alabama came to Selma and that was the last time they came to Selma was when he served as president.”

Young said that the City of Selma along with the brothers of the Delta Phi Lambda Chapter was better because of the life of George Patrick Evans.

“I had the blessed opportunity to see him (Evans) from several different roles,” Young said. “As a long-time personal family friend, as a community partner and organizations as I grew up, and also as a mentor and big brother. I look at that as a blessing because in everything George did, George showed his love for people and that he cared for people. I’m grateful that Selma had George as a resident because Selma was better because of George Evans.”
