The Selma City Council unanimously approved to release RFP on city-wide cameras Tuesday.
PRO-TEM Clay Carmichael presided over the meeting in the absence of City Council President Billy Young. Troy Harvill, Michael Johnson, Lesia James, Jannie Thomas, Sam Randolph and Atkin Jemison were present at the city council meeting.
Selma Mayor James Perkins Jr. discussed the 11 murders in the city this year and recommended Police Chief Kenta Fulford reporting to him through the city council.
“We’ve got a problem,” Perkins said. “We need to fix this together.”
Faya Toure and Carol Robinson each discussed the city’s high murder rate during the Citizen’s Concerns section of the city
The city council rejected a bid to give Appointment Powers to Perkins over Police Chief, Fire Chief, Treasurer, Tax Collector and City Attorney.
Jemison made the motion and seconded by Johnson. Carmichael, Thomas, Harvill voted no. Randolph, James and Johnson voted yes. Jemison changed his vote to no because it can be brought up again for re-vote.
