Officials announced Monday that after almost two decades of operating in Selma, the Belk location in the Selma Mall will close for good on Monday, June 5.
“After a careful review of our business, we will be closing the Belk store in Selma, Ala. on Monday, June 5,” said Jessica Rohlik, Senior Manager of public relations for Belk in an email to The Selma Times-Journal. “We are grateful for the contributions of our Selma associates and are providing them with support during the transition, including the opportunity to interview for a position at another Belk store.”
Rohlik said the decision to close the Selma location comes after a “careful review of our business.”
“We have been proud to serve the Selma community for over 18 years and will be offering our customers 60% off everything in-store, starting on Monday, May 22, as a way to express our appreciation,” Rohlik said.
Sheryl Smedley, executive director for the Selma and Dallas County Chamber of Commerce, said she’s sad to see Belk will be closing,
“We appreciate their investment into the community and the opportunity to provide goods, services, and employment not only to citizens of Selma/Dallas County but also surrounding communities,” Smedley said.
The store was known as McRae’s from 1996 until 2009 when Belk bought the chain of department stores. In 2015, Belk signed a lease at the Selma Mall that will last until June 5.
