Selma will participate in a Celebrate Trails Day on Saturday when Gospel Tabernacle Baptist Church and five other groups host a Slow Ride at 4 p.m.
Gospel Tabernacle, Edmunite Missions, rails to trails, conservation fund, City of Selma and Selma Cycles will host the Slow Ride which is a bike ride starting from Gospel Tabernacle along a trail of either 5 miles or 2.5 miles.. Selma City Councilman Clay Carmichael was one of the people who helped get this project started and he says that the goal is to get people in the community out and active in a safe way.
“The goal is to get some activity centered around cycling and help make safer, more accessible streets, bike lanes, and trails connecting historic landmarks and districts with parks and recreational areas,” Carmichael said. “We want to promote healthy living and need to make the infrastructure available to those who will use it.”
The 5-mile trek will go through parks in Selma while the 2.5-mile trek excludes the parks.
“The ride is a 5-mile ride, but we made a 2.5-mile ride where slower riders can go back straight up church street if they don’t want to do the more difficult trek through the parks, Carmichael said.”
The event is free but people must bring their -own-bike.
