The Meadowview Christian Trojans squeaked out a close win against Sparta on Thursday afternoon by a final of 6-5 thanks to some big hits down the stretch.

The Trojans jumped out to an early lead in the first inning thanks to a two-run RBI single by Demaje Gunn. Meadowview was able to add a third run in the second inning to take a 3-0 lead into the third. The Warriors’ offense woke up in the third inning scoring two runs in the third to cut the lead to one. The Trojans responded again in the bottom of the third inning as Gunn crossed the plate to give the Trojans the 4-2 lead. The big inning came in the fourth for Sparta. Errors started to mount up for the Trojans and the Warriors took advantage of them. Sparta took the lead in the fourth inning scoring three runs giving them a 5-4 lead. It was in the fifth inning that the heroics of pitcher Jack Cobb came into play. After giving up the three runs in the fourth he took matters into his own hands and hit a two-run bomb to give his team the 6-5 lead and the win. Trojans Head Coach Raymond Brown said that as the season progresses he is seeing his team progress and mature.

“We played well at the end,” Brown said. “They are young. They are playing young ball. When you come to think about the game, the game shouldn’t have been that close. We made a couple of crucial errors in spots. Overall, we are getting better. Game by game we are getting better. We made some big hits in key spots. My little left fielder made two great plays and he’s only in eighth grade. Overall it was a good ball game.”
