Basketball season is officially over in Dallas County.

Southside High School was the last team remaining in the AHSAA state playoffs, falling to Sumter Central 53-36 in the Class 3A Central Regional Finals. The Panthers were denied a second straight trip to the 3A Final Four.

Earlier this week, the Keith Bears and Southside Lady Panthers were eliminated in the Central Regional semifinals.

Southside ended a long state tournament drought last year behind its All-State backcourt tandem of Chris Thomas and Tae Spears. Southside head coach Kelvin Lett said the Panthers would remain in contention the following season.

The Panthers did just that, finishing one game short of reaching the Final Four. With twins Erick Smith and Derick Smith returning, we expect the Panthers will make another deep run next year.
