BBQ on the Green is right around the corner again for another year in Selma. The members of Sturdivant Hall are once again preparing for their annual event that will help bring funds to help maintain and upkeep the property.
The City of Selma purchased Sturdivant Hall in 1957 and now serves as a historic house museum. The house contains period antique furnishings, porcelain and doll collections, as well as an impressive array of art. A tour of this site includes the house, detached kitchen, gift shop and formal garden according to ruralswalabama.org.
This is the first year in two years that the BBQ will be held on the actual property due to COVID-19.
“It’s great to have the BBQ on the property this year. It’s our main fundraiser,” Sturdivant Hall’s Museum
Director Mary Margaret Mims said. “This is what we pretty much have for upkeep each year.”
For years now, as October has come around this event has been going on.
“Everyone gets excited,” Mims said. “We start planning and promoting in August for this event.”
If you are wanting to be a part of this event you can get tickets at Sturdivant Hall, 713 Mabry St, Selma, for $25 per person. Tickets are available at the door as well.
This event is always well attended with as many as 500 people throughout the years of BBQ on the Green.
BBQ on the Green will be on Thursday, October 13 starting at 7 p.m. and running until 9 p.m. at the Sturdivant Hall lawn in Selma.
There will be a drive-through starting at 5 p.m. if you are unable to attend the event.
You can get delicious food and all the sides and fixings you can imagine. There will be BBQ provided by Golden Ranch. There will be sides like baked beans, potato salad and rolls. The dessert at the event is homemade and will be made by the board members at Sturdivant Hall. The drinks will be provided by Pepsi Cola as well as Bama Budweiser.
The board has played a big role in this event each year and this year is no different.
“The board is everything at Sturdivant Hall,” Mims said. “ We have a BBQ committee that does everything for the BBQ. On the day of the event, you will see board members at the event working.”
Along with the board, corporate sponsors have also been a big part of this event.
“They are so important,” Mims said. “ They pay for tables of eight and they are just a major part of the success of the BBQ.”
The sponsors for the event are as follows,
Rountree Electric, Selcom, Mayfair Advisory Group (Sam Kirkpatrick), Claude Anderson and Associates, Pilcher McBryde, Henry Brick Co., Fuller Building Supply, International Paper, Bush Hog, Julie Sams DMD, Vaughan Regional Medical Center, Tucker Dentistry, Talton Communications, Dallas Air and Heating, Children’s Dentistry of Central Alabama, G & H Parts, First Cahawba Bank, Bob Fraizer at Frazier Insurance, Remax of Gulf Shores, Gloria Sims, Trustmark Bank and Alabama Power Company.
