Dr. Avis Williams to get honored at Alabama homecoming

Selma City Schools Superintendent Dr. Avis Williams will be honored during Alabama’s homecoming ceremonies this weekend.
Williams will be one of two Alabama College of Education 2021 alumni awards recipients. She will land the Harold L. Bishop Award for Leaders.
For Williams, Dr. Bishop had a major influence in her career. Dr. Williams’ educational philosophies reflect Dr. Bishop’s passion for equity in education. Her dedication to equity has been highlighted by The School Superintendents Association, Cognia, and edFocus. Equity is a core value of Selma City Schools.
Her Aspiring Leaders Academy mentoring program also reflects Dr. Bishop’s influence.
“Dr. Bishop was a mentor and friend,” Williams said. “I credit him for shaping me as an educational leader. It is truly an honor to receive an award in his name. I hope that I can continue his legacy of leadership excellence.”
Williams career accolades includes: the 2020 Alabama Alliance of Black School Educators Dr. Ulysess Byas Superintendent of the Year, 2019 finalist for Alabama State Department of Education Superintendent of the Year.
She was selected by her peers as the School Superintendents of Alabama District Two president.
Avis was awarded the Marbury Technology Innovation award by the Alabama State Department of Education in 2011..
