was born to Deacon James Worford and Sister Blanche Lee Matthews Worford on February 27, 1930, in Plantersville. Gracie went to be with the Lord on Sunday, September 19, 2021, at her home in Sprott with her daughters by her side.
She married her beloved husband Rev. Walter Melton on December 2, 1953 – they were married for 58 years. They raised their family in Sprott. To this union two children were born, Veretta Maxine Melton (Rev. Irvin) Williams and Dr. Sonya Melton (Lonzo) Ford.
Gracie Mae was a graduate of Lincoln Normal School in 1948. She received her Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education from Alabama State University in 1952. Later she received her Master of Science in Education in 1977 West Alabama. She retired from the Perry County School System after serving 32 years.
She was active in her Community in multiple ways. She served in many capacities in and through her Church – Poplar Grove Baptist Church, she served the Perry County Human Resource Board for many years, also helping others through Aide and Ministerial Wives organizations. She was a founding member of the East Perry Volunteer Fire Department and assisted where needed for many years. After retirement she still helped others to achieve their educational goals by helping with GED Testing at Craig Field in Selma.
Gracie Mae leaves to cherish her memories, her two daughters their families:
Daughter: Veretta Maxine (Rev. Irvin) Melton-Williams, granddaughters: Anastasia Simone Williams, and Shardia (James) Jones, great grandsons Zion Lee Williams and James Jones, Jr.
Daughter: Dr. Sonya (Lonzo) Melton–Ford: grandsons Corderral Billingsley and Alonzo Ford, Jr.
Sister: Bernethia (Elmer)Worford Brox Brothers – In – Love : Rev. Woodie Lee Melton, Rev. Carlos Melton, Deacon Sim Melton.
rs-In-Love: Jeanette Melton, Rev. Velma England, Maggie England, Isabella King, Nettie Ramsey and many loving nieces and nephews, as well as a host of other relatives and friends. The Family of Sister Gracie Melton requests that in lieu of flowers, please donate to the Blanche Worford Memorial Scholarship Fund of the East Perry District Association. The East Perry District Association is comprised of six Baptist churches in the Sprott/Marion area, which reports up to the Alabama Baptist State Association through the Southwest region.
This Scholarship Fund’s goal is to provide students of the East Perry District area churches with assistance in achieving their college career objectives.
