Selma QB Club awards 5 scholarships to Dallas County athletes

Five Dallas County football players received scholarships from the Selma Quarterback Club.
The Morgan Academy duo of Matthew Free and Holt Utsey, along with Jackson Barnes of Meadowview Christian School, Jonathan Brown of Dallas County High School and Christopher Bonner of Southside High all received $4,000 scholarships from the Selma QB Club.
Utsey, The Selma Times-Journal football player of the year, will attend the University of Alabama. He said it’s an honor.
“I’m very honored and grateful to follow into my older brother’s footsteps,” Utsey said.
Bonner, The Selma Times-Journal defensive player of the year, will play football at Delta State University. He’s grateful for the award.
“It’s a blessing that I’m getting extra for college and I am thankful,” Bonner said.
Free, who plans to attend Bishop State Community College, said he’s honored to become the latest Senator to get honored by the Selma QB Club.
“I’m excited and honored to receive a scholarship from the Selma Quarterback Club,” Free said. “It’s a great organization that I grew up following.”
Barnes, who will attend Alabama, said he’s grateful for the scholarship.
“The scholarship will help me out, especially coming from a working family” Barnes said. “I’ve always wanted to go to Alabama.”
Brown, who will attend Troy University, said he’s grateful to get assistance for college.
“I’m grateful and honored that the Selma quarterback Club appreciated my hard work,” Brown said.
Gus Colvin, who oversees scholarships for the Selma QB Club, said the organization was always prepared to hand out scholarships despite the COVID-19 pandemic.
