Two Southside football players signed college scholarships on Wednesday.
Linebacker Christopher Bonner and nose-tackle Nash Gibson Jr. both signed on National Signing Day.
Bonner signed with Delta State University. Gibson Jr. signed with Goode Prep School.
Bonner, The Selma Times-Journal defensive MVP, said the Statesmen won him over the first day.
“I felt at home with Delta State,” Bonner said. “I love the coaching staff. Delta State is the best place for me.”
Southside coach Charles Moody said he’s proud of both players landing scholarships.
“I’m elated and super proud of both young men,” Moody said. “A lot of hard work went into them earning scholarships.”
Bonner emerged as the top defensive player in Dallas County with a strong senior season, attracting college recruiters.
Faulkner University, Huntingdon College, Illinois College and Carthage College also offered Bonner.
Fifty one of Bonner’s 92 total tackles were solo. Bonner had 30 tackles for loss, 17 quarterback sacks, forced eight fumbles and recovered three of them.
Gibson Jr., whose father Nash Gibson Sr., is a Dallas County Sheriff Office Deputy, was also a top defender. Opposing teams had trouble guarding Gibson Jr. in the middle. He was honorable mention to the Selma Times-Journal All-Dallas County football team.
