Morgan Academy takes care of business on homecoming

Morgan Academy rode the running of Holt Utsey and the passing of Andrew Thomas to knock off Southern Academy.
Utsey ran for 280 yards, scored two touchdowns, Thomas passed for 294 yards as the Senators prevailed 47-26 Friday on homecoming.
The Senators (4-0, 2-0) remained unbeaten overall and the region.
“I’m so excited for these kids to be 4-0, they work their tails off in practice and games,” Senators coach and Athletic Director Danny Raines said.
Seniors Cobb Beers, Matthew Free, Brody Roberts, Clayton O’Shields, Chris Gardner, Scott Lalone, Holt Utsey and Kenny Nichols played their final homecoming contest.
“Winning on homecoming is awesome, I’m glad we were able to win,” Utsey said.
Morgan Academy jumped out to a 16-6 first quarter lead and never looked back.
Thomas hit Rhyne Williams on a 74-yard TD pass and Utsey added a 89-yard TD run and a pair of two-point conversions.
The Senators scored 11 second quarter points for a 27-14 halftime lead. John Allen Ingram scored from 5 yards out, Chris Gardner added a two-point conversion run and Wade Mason kicked a 32-yard field goal.
Morgan Academy kept the Cougars (1-3, 0-2) at bay in the third quarter, scoring a pair of touchdowns.
Thomas and Gardner connected on a 44-yard TD pass and Utsey added a 57-yard TD run for a 41-26 lead after three quarters.
Thomas’ 62-yard TD pass to Cink Minter in the fourth quarter delivered the knockout punch for the Senators.
Raines’ mother, Greta Rainess, also attended the contest. Raines and his wife, Mary Raines greeted her after the game.
Hannah Lightfoot was crowned homecoming queen at halftime.
