Dallas County Law Enforcement are continuing to search for the body of a missing Dallas County man who disappeared in the Cahaba River.
Steven Nichols, 23, has been missing since Tuesday night when witnesses said he attempted to swim across the river before disappearing beneath the water. Nichols was swimming in the Elam Holley Sr. Park area of Cahaba Park on Highway 22.
According to both Dallas County Sheriff Mike Granthum and Dallas County District Attorney Michael Jackson, Nichols disappeared around 7:30 p.m. Tuesday night.
The initial search ended at 10 p.m. Tuesday night and continued Wednesday and Thursday, but as of press time Thursday, no body had been found.
“We’re searching for the body and we will continue to search,’ Granthum said. “We’re more now in a recovery mode. Due to the rainy weather we’ve had, the search has been tough. The water’s murky and there’s a lot of deluge in the river. We want to find the body and bring closure to the victim’s family.”
The ALEA’s Marine Patrol Division, rescue teams from Autauga County and Elmore County and local private boaters have all assisted the Dallas County Sheriff’s Office and Selma-Dallas County rescue team with the search.
