The Selma Art Guild will host an English Tea Party next Sunday (Feb. 16) from 3 – 5 p.m.
Selma Art Guild Co-president and Publicity Coordinator Jo Taylor says the English Tea Part will be a first for the group.
Taylor said that the Selma Art Guild concocted the event to provide the community with a unique experience as well as fund the art Guild’s mission to promote the visual arts and provide art education to the Black Belt.
Taylor said the upcoming English Tea Party would provide a unique experience that will hopefully “open the doors” to what the Selma Art Guild does to some new people.
Taylor hopes that the English Tea Party will appeal to different people who wouldn’t necessarily be interested in the Selma Art Guild’s other events.
“I think the whole thing is a really great idea,” she said.
According to Taylor, the English Tea Party will feature an assortment of treats for tea-goers to enjoy including hot English tea with cream and “all sorts of homemade goodies” to accompany them.
Among the “homemade goodies” Taylor listed scones, whipped cream, strawberry jam, lemon curd and cucumber sandwiches.
“All of the things traditionally associated with English Tea,” said Taylor.
According to Taylor, authenticity will be enforced by Selma Art Guild Member Joanna Nichols, who is English.
Taylor said that Nichols would ensure that the approaching Tea Party will be properly decorated, bordering on “visual art”.
“Tea is visual art,” said Taylor. “Having tea is a ritual in places like England, China and Japan. We don’t really have anything like that here.”
Tickets for The English Tea Party are $20 and can be purchased at the Selma Art Guild on Fridays and Saturdays from noon – 4.
Tickets are also available at Gallery 905 and Queen City Market.
All proceeds benefit the Selma Art Guild.
