Ninth-ranked Edgewood Academy quickly turned its AISA Top 10 showdown at Morgan Academy into a rout.

Tailback Mitchell Boyd rushed for 215 yards and scored three touchdowns as the Wildcats pounded the eighth-ranked Senators 28-0 on Friday night at Morgan Stadium.

The Senators dropped to 0-2 and are off to one of their worst starts in years.

Morgan Academy head coach Josh Thacker made no excuses after the game and summed up the outcome in only a few words.

“We got our butts whipped all over the field,” Thacker said before heading into the locker room with the Senators.

The Wildcats (2-0) took a 14-0 first quarter lead as Boyd scored on long runs of 49 and 84 yards. The junior took advantage of Edgewood Academy’s offensive line opening up holes and raced untouched to the end zone twice.

Morgan Academy (0-2) had a chance to cut into the Wildcats’ lead midway in the second quarter as Matthew Free recovered a fumble at the Wildcats’ 29-yard-line.

The drive ended when running back Holt Utsey was stopped inches short on fourth-and-five. It was the Senators’ only drive in Edgewood territory.

Edgewood Academy padded its lead to 21-0 at halftime as quarterback Alex Johnson hit a wide open Kam Burleson for a 30-yard touchdown pass.

Boyd’s two-yard touchdown run late in the third quarter capped the game’s scoring.

Edgewood went to its reserves in the fourth quarter, but continued moving the ball against the Senators’ defense.

Several former Morgan Academy athletes were in attendance, including former Senator shortstop Gunnar Henderson, who’s now in the Baltimore Orioles’ farm system. Henderson was The Selma Times-Journal’s baseball player of the year last spring.
