The Selma High School Saints got the better of the Dallas County High School Hornets at last night’s inaugural jamboree, with the Saints beating the Hornets 20-0 before the game was called off due to a downpour of rain and thunder.

The Saints set the tone for the rest of the evening early on by coming out with a touchdown on their first drive.

After beginning at the opposite 30-yard line, Freshman Quarterback Keondre Hope, 3, entrusted the ball to Senior Running Back Amarian Molette, 2, for three consecutive plays gaining a little over 10 yards before Hope threw a pass to fellow Freshman Roderick Webster, bringing the Saints to the 40-yard line near the end zone.

After a few extra yards gained by Senior Running Back Tre’Derion Phillips, 20, Hope threw a touchdown pass to Sr. Wide Reciever Nicholas Parnell, 5, before running the ball in and completing the 2 point conversion setting the saints up 8-0 at the end of the first drive.

The saints continued to show their strength on defense, stopping the hornets on all fronts despite a few good runs from Junior Hornet Quarterback Calvin Griffen, 14.

Selma took over with a huge head-start towards the end zone and soon scored its second touchdown thanks to a catch by Molette.

Then Saints failed at their second 2 point conversion attempt but secured their lead on the hornets 14-0 with 1:42 in the first quarter.

The Hornets couldn’t seem to find their footing in the second quarter as they fumbled the ball a few plays into the next drive, setting the Saints up to secure their win thanks to a series of runs from Phillips, who scored the Saints final touchdown of the evening bringing the Saints up 20-0

DCHS Head Coach Heath LeVertt was happy to come away for the jamboree with no injured players and said that the team has plenty to work on before the next game.

“Defensively, we’ve got to do a better job tackling and get 11 guys to the football,” he said. “Offensively, we’ve got to understand that moving the football takes time… we’ve got to scrap and fight for it.”

SHS Head Coach Will Gandy said he saw some great things out of his team Friday night, but still feels the team has much to work on during the season ahead.

“We saw some good things,” he said. “But we’re still not where we need to be. We really need to tighten up the offensive line. We’ve got a long season ahead of us but, once again, we saw some good things.”
