New school year is a chance for students to excel

It’s the time of year that whether we are ready or not for is here.

The first day of school is an important time for not only the employees of Selma City Schools and Dallas County Schools but for students as well.

For teachers, it is the primary time to lay the groundwork of a successful year. What happens on the first day will set the tone of what the year will bring.

For Selma City Schools, this will be the first year without Byrd First Class and Cedar Park Elementary with Pre-K moving to Sophia P. Kingston Elementary and Cedar Park students moving to Edgewood Elementary.

This move was not easy but it is something that had to happen in order for the school system to stay functional.

For some parents, this is the first year they will send their children to school and that is an emotional time.

For some seniors, it will be the last first day of school for them in the school system and trust everyone that says the last year of high school will fly by. Next thing you know, it will be graduation.

Some teachers will be teaching for the last year.

For all students however it is a new beginning, a fresh slate and a chance for them to excel at this year.

Just with teachers setting the tone, it is up to the students to take their schoolwork seriously and it should start on the first day.

Have a good year, students and school system employees.
