Summer Fun Poker Run set for Saturday

Residents of the Selma – Dallas County area will have a unique opportunity to both have a good time on the river and support a worthwhile cause this weekend.

The Selma Charity League will host a “Summer Fun Poker Run” tomorrow on the Alabama River.

This marks the first Summer Fun Poker Run that the Selma Charity League has thrown, and according the event’s chairperson, Ann Bradford, the organization is really looking forward to Saturday’s festivities.

“We were really excited to come up with the idea,” said Bradford. “It’s going to be a lot of fun for everyone involved…as long as a tropical storm doesn’t come.”

To win the $500 prize at the Summer Fun Poker Run, contestants must visit at least three out five stops along the river including the dock at Mac’s Fish camp from noon – 2 p.m., Steve and Rachel Todd’s Landing from noon – 2 p.m., Lowell Butt’s Sandbar from 2 – 4 p.m., Butch and Beth Wilson’s Dock from 2 – 4 p.m. and finally Long Beach Sandbar from 4 – 6 p.m.

At each stop contestants will draw a card and have it logged on their tally sheet by a Selma Charity League Member, creating a poker hand after all the stops have been visited, at the end of the day the highest hand will take home the prize.

Registration begins at Mac’s Fish Camp landing at 11 a.m. the cost is $20 per hand of poker or $50 for three hands.

Proceeds collected from the event will benefit scholarship funds for The Distinguished Young Women of Dallas County.

“I love being able to offer something fun for our community that also supports our community,” said Bradford. “It’s a great way to have fun on a weekend but also a great way to support these girls who are on their way to bigger and brighter things.”
