TKO to host Selma pride event this weekend

The Knights and Orchids Society Inc. (TKO) will host the second annual Selma pride event beginning tonight and continuing until Sunday afternoon.

TKO is a southern centered grassroots startup founded and led by black, queer, transgender and gender non-conforming people supporting gender justice and LGBTQ visibility.

“It’s important that we have events like this to let the younger generation of LGBTQ people know that they do have a place in this world and that they matter,” said TKO Representative Christina Nicholson. “Pride is celebration with a purpose, and we hope to continue sending this message for years to come.”

All of the weekend’s events will be held at The Selma Center for Nonviolence Truth and Reconciliation, located at 8 Mulberry Road., Selma, AL 36701.

The festivities will officially begin tonight at 7 p.m, where there will be a ticketed artist reception dinner featuring a sneak peek into the upcoming documentary Dirt Road Glory, filmed by Huntsville narrative artist Traniesa ‘TC’ Caldwell. Tickets for this event will start at $50 for general admission.

The Splash and Status Jam is open to guests of all ages and admission is free. Attendees are encouraged to break the stigma of HIV in the south by getting tested, getting informed, and celebrating life.

Beginning at 10:30 p.m. Saturday night there will be exquisite drag performances by local artists as well as RuPaul Drag Race season 8 winner, Bob the Drag Queen. Guests must be at least 19 to attend. General admission is $25, and VIP packages are available for this event.
