Troy University clobbers Alabama State at Sting Fest

Troy University toppled Alabama State 20-5 in the second annual Max Sting Fest on Tuesday at Riverwalk Stadium in Montgomery.

The Trojans wasted no time in getting on the board and taking the Hornets starting pitcher, Jeremy Rivera, to task – lead-off batter Rigsby Mosley was hit by a pitch and immediately driven in by Drew Frederic.

An RBI double from Chase Smartt, followed by two RBIs from Dalton Sinquefield and Austin Garofalo, gave the Trojans a 4-0 first inning lead.

The Hornets were immediately set back on their heels as Mosley blasted one out of the park, followed by Smartt’s two-run homer for a 7-0 Trojans lead.

The Trojans struck once again in the top of the third off a sacrifice RBI from Mosley for a 8-0 lead.

The Hornets finally put a mark on the board in the bottom of the third after Christopher DeGuzman singled and scored on Eriq White’s single to make it 8-1.

In the top of the fourth, the Trojans had their best plate appearance of the day. After Sadler Goodwin walked, Smartt drove him in with a double. Smartt crossed the plate himself after a sacrifice RBI from Sinquefield.

Shortly after, Garofalo walked and crossed the plate after a two-run homer from Manning Early.

The Hornets brought two pitchers into the game during the inning – Darrius Wright walked a batter, gave up a homerun and a triple and hit a batter before being replaced by Britt Buckelew – to no avail and the bottom of the fourth began with the Trojans up 13-1.

The Hornets put another run on the board after Cameron Hearn slapped a triple and was driven in by White, bringing the score to 13-2.

Reed Smith knocked a solo homer in the top of the sixth, to make the score 14-2.

Two homeruns in the top of the seventh, off the bats of the Trojans’ Tanner Jackson and Cole Prestegard, brought the score to 16-2.

In the bottom of the eighth, the Hornets’ Angel Jimenez reached on an error and Trevor Jurjevich drew a walk – an RBI single from Yamil Pagan brought in one run and another run got walked in to make it 17-5.

The Trojans scoredin the top of the ninth, after Caleb Bartolero launched a two-RBI double and Tyler Head slapped an RBI single to close out the scoring.
