One of the best baseball seasons for Dallas County High School in years ended on Friday night.
Holtville swept the Hornets in their best-of-3 Class 4A state playoff series, winning 10-0 and 5-1 at Earl Griffin Baseball Field.
The Hornets finished the season at 8-8, including an Area championship.
The Bulldogs (20-9) dominated the first contest as Drew Nobles tossed a two-hitter. D.J. Smyley and Cade Whitaker had the Hornets’ only two hits in the first game.
Dallas County performed better in the second contest, taking a 1-0 lead on Josh Brown’s RBI during the third inning.
Holtville tied the game at 1-1 on Owen Chandlee’s RBI walk in the fifth inning.
Things fell apart for the Hornets in the sixth inning. Mikey Forney’s two-run double put Holtville up for good at 3-1. Forney later scored on a Dallas County fielding error.
“I got the pitch I wanted and I smoked it,” Forney said. “It felt good to help the team win the series.”
Chapelle Washam was the winning pitcher in game two. Cade Whitaker and Darrius Ellis were the losing pitchers for the Hornets.
“The first game was a little rocky, we didn’t play bad, but Holtville hit the ball well,” Hornets coach Mark Roleau said. “We played well in the second game except for one inning. Holtville has a good team.”
