On Saturday, April 6, the Selma-Dallas County Alabama State University (ASU) Alumni Association held their Stop the Violence rally and scrimmage event at Memorial Stadium.
Despite the rain, Chapter President Dr. Ronald Peoples said the event was a success.
“It was a very good event and the purpose of the event was more important to us than what side won the scrimmage,” he said. “We wanted to let people know that we are interested in our community and stopping the violence. That was the main purpose. We wanted young people to know we are in support of stopping the violence.
“We thought this would be a remarkable way to show our position as ASU alumni and our members worked hard to make sure it was a success and we counted it as a total success,” he said. “We have been supporting the community over 18 years, but this is the second year we have had the scrimmage. Each year we also sponsor a Little League Baseball and football team with the Selma Parks and Recreation Department and each year we offer a scholarship to each high school in the Selma and Dallas County Districts, and we have done this for the past 18 years.”
Peoples also said he is looking forward to next year’s event.
