The eighth annual Alabama River Chili Cook-Off is fast approaching.

25 teams have entered the cook-off so far, with more applicants expected to come in before the event begins on Thursday.

A team of five judges will select a first, second, and third place winner as well as a crowd favorite recipient.

Blackbelt Benefit Group (BBG) inherited the event from Dallas County Leadership Class, this is their second year hosting the event.

Another change that occurred last year was moving the festival to the other side of Water Avenue but this year the event returns to the original location in front of the St. James Hotel.

For those that don’t like chili, there will still be plenty of entertainment.

BBG president Josh Wilkerson says there will be a DJ and live music set up for people of all ages.

Each year proceeds collected from the cook-off go to a local non-profit organization, this year Easterseals will receive all the money collected from the event.

“Easterseals helps people of all ages will disabilities of all kinds,” said Wilkerson. “They’re a great organization.

Wilkerson’s favorite part of the event every year is watching the community come together.

“We’re so thankful for everyone who shows up to support us every year,” he said. “It really means a lot to us.
