With its Area 5, Class 6A Championship on the line, Selma High turned to Jarvis Moss in the closing seconds.

The sophomore hit three free throws with seven seconds left lifted the Saints past Stanhope-Elmore 50-49 on Friday at Selma High Gymnasium.

Moss, who finished with 17 points, said he had no choice but to deliver.

“I was thinking, I have to make these free throws,” Moss said. “I appreciate my teammates getting me the ball even I was missing shots.”

Stanhope-Elmore led 49-47 with 18 seconds left. The Saints drove down the court and found Moss. He was fouled attempting a three-pointer. He exhaled lightly, then calmly hit all three free throws.

The Mustangs nearly erased Moss’ game-winning heroics in the final seconds. Stanhope-Elmore drove the length of the floor, but Cornelius Wright’s layup fell short as time expired. The jubilant Saints players and student body mobbed Moss near the team’s locker room.

“These guys believe in each other,” Saints coach Robert Lane said. “We had our ups and downs, but they stuck together. We reached one of our goals, now it’s time to go for another goal.”

Moss, Javonte Stubbs and Marquavis Davis made the All-Tournament team.

Selma will host either Paul Bryant or Hillcrest in Sub-regional action at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Selma girls 72, Stanhope-Elmore 20: Rodericka Parker scored 21 points and made six assists as the Lady Saints won their 10th area title. Aaliyah Hatcher added 14 points and seven assists. Parker, Hatcher and Ta-sharri Grimes all made the Girls’ All-Tournament team.

Selma scored the game’s first 13 points and cruised to an easy victory. In the second half, Saints played their reserves.

“We’ve had success here, I’m blessed,” Lady Saints coach Anthony Harris said. “The girls did a great job and I’m glad we got to play everybody.”
