Prep Roundup: Southside sweeps, Morgan Academy girls advance

Both Southside High basketball teams advanced to next week’s Sub-Regional tournament.

Tae Spears scored 20 points and grabbed 10 rebounds as the Panthers beat Booker T. Magnet 70-50 in the Class 3A, Area 6 tournament. Chris Thomas scored 14 points, while Chris Bonner added 10 points and 12 rebounds for Southside, who plays Prattville Christian Academy in the finals at 7 p.m. Thursday.

The Lady Panthers also beat BTW 45-21. Southside plays Prattville Christian Academy in the finals at 5:30 p.m. Thursday.

Abigail Lane scored 18 points as Morgan Academy beat Russell Christian Academy 45-21. Morgan Academy advances to the AISA’s Elite Eight, where it will face Northside Methodist at 6 p.m. in Montgomery.

Morgan Academy boys can qualify for the Elite Eight if the Senators beat Kingwood Christian Academy at 6 p.m. Thursday night.

In the Area 6, Class 1A tournament, Ellwood Christian Academy hammered Billingsley 95-65. Host ECA will play Autaugaville in the finals on Friday at 7 p.m.

ECA girls fell to Autaugaville 65-28 in the opening round.

Both Dallas County teams were eliminated in the Class 4A, Area 5 tournament. Greensboro beat the Hornets 73-59. The Lady Hornets fell to Sumter County 65-25.

Keith fell to A.L. Johnson 64-41 in the Area 4, Class 1A tournament at Linden.

Both Selma High teams will be playing for the Area 5, Class 6A championships at home on Friday night.

The Lady Saints will play in the finals at 5:30 p.m. The Saints will meet Stanhope-Elmore in the finals at 7 p.m.
