The Black Belt Community Foundation (BBCF) has scheduled two days of community events to celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. (MLK) Day.

The W.K. Kellogg Foundation granted funding to the BBCF as part of its nationwide Truth, Racial Healing and Transformation (TRHT) process and recognized the local group as its official TRTH partner in Selma.

To get the ball rolling, the BBCF partnered with the Selma Center for Nonviolence, Truth and Reconciliation (CNTR) to launch the slate of events scheduled for Monday and Tuesday next week.

“We are happy to continue the momentum of TRHT Selma into the new year with these two days’ worth of events that will highlight service to the community, relationship building and eye-opening, education experiences for all those participating,” Felicia Lucky, BBCF President, said in an email. “These underscore the message and legacy of Dr. King as well as foster the healing and transformation for Selma and Dallas County that the ‘National Day of Racial Healing’ symbolizes.”

On Monday, Jan. 21, MLK Day, the groups will host a breakfast and winter clothing giveaway at 8 a.m. at the Edmundite Missions’ BOSCO Center on Griffin Avenue.

At 9:50 a.m., the Learning Tour of the Equal Justice Initiative (EJI) Museum and the National Memorial for Peace and Justice will take place.

A bus will depart from Tabernacle Baptist Church and head to Montgomery.

Bus seats are filling up quickly, so organizers encourage anyone interested in participating to contact the Selma CNTR at 334-526-4539 for more information.

On Tuesday, Jan. 22, recognized as the National Day of Racial Healing, there will be a live streamcast viewing party hosted by film director Ava Duvernay, who directed “Selma,” at the Selma CNTR located at 8 Mulberry Road at 3 p.m.

Afterward, at 5:30 p.m., the groups will host the Beloved Community Meal and Conversations event.
