AARP chapter in Selma seeks new members

The AARP Chapter in Selma is having their membership drive on Thursday, Oct. 18 at the Selma-Dallas County Public Library.
The event, which will take placed in the Vaughan Community room, is from 1-3 p.m. Food and games will be provided.
The organization, formerly known as the American Association of Retired Persons, currently has 60 members in the AARP No. 3352 chapter. The group is for men and women aged 55 and older.
“Some people aren’t aware we have a group in Selma,” AARP President Evelyn Cox said. “We’ve done a membership drive before.”
To become a member in the Selma chapter, a person must belong to the AARP National organization. They must bring their card to the meeting and pay a $5 membership fee for the year.
The Selma chapter meets on the second Monday of each month at 11:30 a.m. at Vaughan Place, located on 1300 Old Orrville Road.
“We have a network of tools, people and information that we promote for a better life,” Cox said. “We connect seniors who feel disconnected and alone with another seniors throughout the year. We are a family.”
Members are encouraged to bring a non-perishable food item or can goods for donation to the Selma Area Food Bank for the upcoming Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays.
The member that brings the most members will be awarded a Walmart gift cards for prizes first, second and third places. The member that donates the most items will receive a gift bag from the food blitz drive.
