Elbony Harris plans to retire from the Naval Academy.

The 2002 graduate of Keith High School in Orrville was recently promoted to Chief Petty Officer in the Navy.

Harris was also praised for helping lead future Sailors to Recruit Training Command (RTC).  She’s part of the Navy District Recruiting District (NRD) in San Antonio, Texas. It’s located with Military Entrance Processing Station (MEPS).

She spoke with The Selma Times-Journal via email from Texas and thrilled at her promotion.

“I am truly humbled,” Harris said. “I know this won’t be the easiest thing, but I am willing to take on the responsibility.”

When Harris joined the military in 2002, she didn’t plan to stay long.

“I wanted to do four years, go to school and get out,” Harris joked. “I joined the Navy to make a better life for myself, travel, and make a difference.”

In November, she will celebrate 16 years. Harris said her long-term goal is to retire in the Navy.

Harris said she loves being in the Navy because it brings discipline.

“It gives me to platform to do whatever it is I want to do with my life,” Harris said. “It gives me structure and a sense of belonging.”
