Well-behaved, leashed dogs can join their humans on a one-hour guided tour of Old Cahawba located at 9518 Cahaba Road in Orrville.

The tours will start at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 1.

The dog-friendly wagon tour will include short walks throughout the park associated with Cahawba’s most notable animal ancestors.

Jonathan Mathews, assistant site director, said there is a lot of history associated with animals at the park.

“We’ve got a lot of animal stories that occurred down here at Cahawba,” he said. “We thought this was a creative way for people to include their pets in their weekend activity.”

Mathews said much like the recent bike tours, the wagon tour will stop in different locations for a brief history discussion.

“We will be taking a wagon ride around the park,” he said. “We’ll visit various locations around the park and talk about some of the animal related stories.”

There will be opportunities for the animals to get a drink of water along the way.

“At different stops we’ll get out the bowl of water and the dogs will get refreshed,” he said.

Old Cahawba is a historical site of the Alabama Historical Commission. Mathews said any chance the organization gets to tell the history of Old Cahawba they take advantage of it.

“We’re all about history here at Old Cahawba, and we have to be creative to sneak in a little history,” he said. “People who might not otherwise visit an archeological park, or might not be that interested in history might come down just to bring their animals.”

People without dogs are welcome to attend also.

The cost is $10 per adult and $8 per child. All dogs are free to attend.
