The death of a 24-year-old African-American man is under investigation after his body was found Tuesday morning in the field.

Selma Police Chief Spencer Collier said Quentin Davis’ body was found around 6 a.m. Tuesday morning between Pettus Street and Abbott Avenue. Officers were dispatched to the area after receiving a call from a witness.

According to Collier, the shooting occurred between 11:30 p.m. and 11:50 p.m. Monday night on the 400 block of Pettus Street. The police received a call and arrived on the scene after the shooting.

Witnesses told police the shooters were two black men wearing dark clothing and raced from the scene on foot, going north.

“He was shot multiple times in the back,” Collier said. “It indicated a large caliber rifle was used. We recovered a handgun and two shells in the victim’s possession. It was an exchange of gunfire between them.”

Collier said the department doesn’t have a motive in Davis’ death.

The recent number of arrests in the Queen City has Collier alarmed.

“We were down in homicide, but these last few weeks concern me,” Collier said.
