On June 26 through 30, The Selma American Legion Thomas R. Mackin Post 20 will be hosting its Brunswick Stew Sale at its post on 4210 Highway 80 West.
The stew can be purchased for $9 per quart.
This fundraiser is done three times a year, and all proceeds will go towards the operating of the post as well as a variety of programs sponsored by the Selma American Legion, which includes the distribution of scholarships for boys and girls to go to Boys and Girls State, the American Legion Baseball Team, two softball teams and the American Legion’s Fish Fry.
John Coon, Post Adjutant of the Selma American Legion Thomas R. Mackin Post 20, said the stew sale that occurred in February was a tremendously successful event.
“The community always supports, and we sell out every time,” Coon said.
According to Coon, the stew sale has been going on for over 20 years.
“I love the stew and I am a big supporter of the Alabama Boys State and Girl State and the work that we’re doing through that program,” Coon said. “It benefits the kids that go there, achieve and learn.”
Boys and Girls State are week-long programs for the eleventh and twelfth graders that educate them on leadership and responsibilities. According to Coon, for the past 8 or 10 years, it’s been on the campus at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa. Boys attend for one week and girls attend the succeeding week.
“We are proud that this year, for the first time, we had a young man from Selma High attend, and young lady from Southside, we sponsored a scholarship for both of them,” Coon said. “It was the first time we hit those schools.”
Due to high demand by the community, the American Legion sales its stew the week before the week of the Fourth of July, as it makes for good time to get stew for the fourth and family activities.
