EDITORIAL: RV can help serve local sexual assault victims

The Family Sunshine Center headquartered in Montgomery recently started offering services to sexual assault victims in Dallas, Perry and Wilcox counties in Selma.

With help from the Lighthouse Counseling Center, the FSC now has an RV on the Vaughan Regional Medical Center campus that can serve victims without making them travel to Montgomery for an examination and counseling.

Sexual assaults are a common crime, and it is not easy for victims to come forward, but the center is hoping this might make it easier on the victims by giving them a local, safe location to come to for help.

Janice Jones, a sexual assault counselor for the center, said many times victims just say forget about their incident when they have to travel.

This eliminates that issue and will hopefully help people report sexual assaults. Exams and counseling are offered at the RV 24 hours a day, seven days a week. They can be reached at (334) 213-1227 or (334) 399-1451.
