With six days left to qualify for the June Democratic and Republican primaries, several more candidates have made the cut.

Last week, just four candidates had qualified to run for county offices, and as of Friday afternoon eight more qualified after submitting their paperwork and paying their fees.

The election is scheduled for June 5, and several county and state offices are up for grabs. If needed, a primary runoff is scheduled for July 17. The general election will be held on Nov. 6.

Incumbents Sen. Hank Sanders and Rep. Prince Chestnut have qualified to run for reelection for Senate District 23 and House District 67, respectively. The only other candidate that has qualified to run for a state position so far is Lynnethia Robinson, who is running for circuit clerk of the Fourth Judicial Circuit.

According to Ozetta Thomas, treasurer for the Dallas County Democratic Executive Committee, a total of 12 candidates have qualified for county offices.

Nicholas D. Switzer and Clifford O. Hunter joined the race for probate judge. Jimmy Nunn, who currently serves as the city of Selma’s attorney, and Robert W. Green were qualified last week. Current Probate Judge Kim Ballard has decided not to run for reelection after serving two terms.

Capt. Mike Granthum with the Dallas County Sheriff’s Department remains the only candidate to qualify for the sheriff race so far.

Martis M. Black and incumbent W. Alan Dailey have qualified to run for coroner.

Incumbent Carolyn Bates qualified last week to run for the District 3 seat on the Dallas County Board of Education. Mamie Williams Solomon has also qualified to run for District 3.

Bates also qualified to run for Dallas County Democratic Executive Committee.

Incumbent Roy Edwards has qualified to run for reelection for District 4 on the Dallas County Board of Education. Melvin Flanagan Brown has also qualified to run for District 4.

According to Leonard Ingram, chairman of the Dallas County Republican Party, incumbent Mark Story is expected to qualify to run for the Dallas County Board of Education.

Dr. David Hodo has qualified to run for Dallas County Democratic Executive Committee. He also qualified to run for the state committee.

The deadline for candidates to qualify is Feb. 9. Their paperwork and fees must all be completed and paid by 5 p.m.

Thomas said she expects qualifying to pick up over the next few days with the deadline approaching.
