Arthur Lunsford Woodfin

Mr. Arthur Lunsford Woodfin, lovingly known as Sonny, of Selma, and formerly of Uniontown, passed away at his home on Thursday, Jan. 25, 2018, at the age of 89. Sonny was born in Monroeville on Oct. 26, 1928.

Mr. Woodfin was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur and Carrie Woodfin; sisters, Frances Kelly of Norfolk, Virginia and Carolyn Weissinger of Browns. Also, preceding him in death was his grandson, Spencer J. Coleman Jr. of Wetumpka.

Sonny is survived by his devoted wife of 59 years, Jacqueline Tate Woodfin; son, Woody Woodfin (Debbie); daughter, Beth Coleman (Spencer); grandchildren, Cooper Woodfin, Laney Woodfin, Wynne Coleman IV and Sam Coleman. He is also survived by one brother, James P. Woodfin of Uniontown.

He attended Marion Institute and graduated from Alabama Polytechnical Institute with a B.S. degree in Agricultural Science.

In the United States Air Force, he spent two years in Anchorage, Alaska, serving as a Commander at Point Barrow.

He then returned home to farm the family land to raise beef cattle, soybeans and operate a grade A dairy farm. He served on the Soil Conservation Committee and as president of the Perry County Cattlemens’ Association. Sonny was director of the Farm Bureau and served as a vice president and director of the Perry County Milk Producers Association. He was a member of the board of directors of Canebrake Bank for 20 years. Sonny served as chairman of the Uniontown High School Board, was a member and former vice chairman of ASCS for the Uniontown District and served on the school board at Southern Academy. He went from farming into the trucking business until he retired.

Sonny was active in church and his community and was an elder of First Presbyterian Church of Uniontown and an associate member of Cornerstone Presbyterian Church of Selma. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend.

The words that sum up his life are loyal, loving and tough as nails.

Visitation will be at Cornerstone Presbyterian Church in Selma on Monday, Jan. 29, at noon with the funeral following at 1 p.m. in the church sanctuary. Burial will be at Rosemont Cemetary in Uniontown. Pallbearers are Cooper Woodfin, Wynne Coleman, Sam Coleman, Laney Woodfin, Robert Bamberg, Carl Green and Jim Broussard.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church of Uniontown or Cornerstone Presbyterian Church of Selma.
