A personnel hearing for fired city treasurer Ronita Wade has been pushed back.

The hearing was originally scheduled to take place after this past Thursday night’s Selma City Council work session.

Wade, who was fired for the second time by Mayor Darrio Melton in December, will have a hearing before the city council on Thursday, Jan. 25 at 1 p.m., according to her attorney, Julian McPhillips.

Council President Corey Bowie told the council as the work session started Thursday evening the hearing would be rescheduled due to “new developments.” After the meeting, Bowie said he could not go into detail on what those developments were.

McPhillips said Friday he doesn’t know a whole lot about the developments either.

“I don’t know too much about the new developments yet, but the fact that we’re having a hearing, I think, is a good sign for us,” McPhillips said. “We’re in the midst of working on our legal strategies, but we’re going to have the hearing first.”

McPhillips said he is currently in discussions with another Montgomery attorney, Rick Howard, about getting money back that is owed to Wade. He did not specify an amount or where the money is from.

Wade was placed on administrative leave in September by Melton after the mayor said she had been insubordinate and was working to undermine him regarding the new budget. During a Sept. 19 budget hearing, Wade presented an alternate budget to the council than the one Melton presented.

She was then fired on Sept. 27 following a week-long paid administrative leave. Ten days later, Wade was reinstated to her position as city treasurer after a vote was taken by the Selma City Council after McPhillips sent a letter threatening a federal lawsuit. Two days after she returned to work, Wade was placed on paid administrative leave again.

Melton fired Wade for the second time on Dec. 22. Wade has opted to have a personnel hearing, so Melton will discuss with the council why he fired her and allow her and her attorney to respond to those charges.

McPhillips said the hearing is scheduled for Jan. 25 at 1 p.m.
