More than 14,000 voters showed up to the polls in Dallas County Tuesday to cast their vote in the special general election for a seat in the U.S. Senate between Democratic candidate Doug Jones and Republican candidate Roy Moore.

The Associated Press called the election in Jones’ favor at 9:24 p.m. Tuesday night over Moore.

Jones had a total of 10,492 votes in Dallas County to Moore’s 3,485. Jones garnered around 75 percent of the vote.

With a total of 31,303 registered voters in Dallas County, voter turnout was around 45 percent. Suzanne Ingram, chief clerk in the Dallas County Probate Office, said it has been quite a while since Dallas County saw that kind of turnout.

“I am so proud of Dallas County for getting out and voting,” Ingram said. “It was way above all of our projected amounts.”

Going into the election, Ingram and others estimated a voter turnout between 13 to 20 percent. Dallas County’s results made a significant impact in the results. Dallas County was also the last county in the state to report any results.

Jones won 25 out of 30 precincts, and Moore only won five. Those five precincts are Summerfield Volunteer Fire Department, the Tyler Community Center, Good Hope Church, the new National Guard Armory and Memorial Stadium.

There were only 60 write-in votes in the county.
