A man has been charged with murder in connection with a woman’s death overnight Friday.

Alfred Vaughn, 52, was arrested at a home in the 1300 block of F.D. Reese Street and taken to the Dallas County Jail. He is accused of murdering Barbara Alexander, 43. Selma Police Chief Spencer Collier described the scene as “what appears to be a domestic violence homicide.”

According to Collier, the victim was dead when Selma Police Department officers arrived on the scene. Collier said Vaughn and Alexander were boyfriend and girlfriend.

The cause of death remains under investigation. An autopsy will be performed by the Alabama Department of Forensic Science.

Vaughn will be held without bail awaiting an initial appearance in court.

Additional information was not available Saturday morning.

The homicide is Selma’s sixth of the year and first since July 3. There has also been one additional homicide this year in Dallas County Sheriff’s Department’s jurisdiction. Selma and Dallas County had a combined 17 homicides in 2017.
