The Selma Times-Journal welcome two students to its newsroom this summer as interns.
Mary Stewart, a sophomore at Auburn University, and Justin Smith, a junior at the University of Alabama, will work in the Times-Journal newsroom over the next 10 weeks.
Stewart is a 2016 graduate of John T. Morgan Academy and the daughter of Jon and Shannon Stewart. She is majoring in communications and during her freshman year was a member of Freshman Forum and on the publicity committee for the BIG Event. She now serves on the Student Government Association cabinet.
“I’m very excited to be working at The Selma Times-Journal this summer because I will be able to learn more about journalism as well as getting to know my community better,” Stewart said.
Smith is a 2015 graduate of Robert C. Hatch High School in Uniontown and the son of Tiffany Smith and Billy Bridge. He is majoring in journalism and minoring in history. At UA, Smith has worked as a contributing writer for The Crimson White newspaper and is a Dean’s List student, member of Alpha Lambda Delta National Honor Society and involved with the Association of Residential Communities and Student Development Council.
“I am grateful as well as excited to work with the Selma Times-Journal. I see it as a great opportunity to improve on my journalistic writing skills and gain connections,” Smith said.
Stewart and Smith will contribute daily to The Selma Times-Journal print and digital products as well as special sections and Selma The Magazine.
“I’m proud to welcome Mary and Justin to our newsroom for the next couple of months. I think it’s extra special that they are both local, Black Belt students interesting in journalism and learning more about the place they call home and grew up in,” said Times-Journal editor Justin Averette.
