Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive

This is Mother’s Day weekend, so understandably a lot of focus will be on our moms and on Sunday, but there’s an easy task you can do Saturday to help out a lot of people.

On the second Saturday of May each year, letter carriers across the country take part in the Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive — known as the largest one-day food drive in the nation.

The Selma Post Office will be participating as well and will be collecting nonperishable food drive. Each item should be place by the mailbox for the letter carrier to collect on Saturday.

In years past, the food drive has collected around 70 million pounds of food and the drive has delivered more than one million pounds of food the past 24 years.

The Selma Area Food Bank provides food for hundreds, if not thousands, of people each week and the summer is presumably a busy time of the year.

Children are about to get out of school, so that means a bigger need for food in many households.

We encourage everyone to do their part. Put nonperishable food items in your mail box and help those who are less fortunate. It’s as simple as that.
