Kathryn Mayo’s Selma Portrait Project will open Thursday at the old Sneakers building on Broad Street.

She has spent the last four months in Selma photographing the people of the city and telling their stories through photographs and audio that she incorporates into her show.

Mayo is originally from Selma, but has been away for around 20 years and is currently a professor of photography at Cosumnes River College in California.

It’s good to see someone that has moved off return home, even if it is for a few months, to capture the positive side of Selma.

Mayo said she learned a lot about Selma while she was here, specifically about much people care about the city and want to see it improve. It’s great to know that someone from the outside can come in and see how much the people here truly care about the city and one another. Mayo’s show opens Thursday at 5:30 p.m. at 201 Broad Street and will be open Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m.
