STATE TRACK: DC’s Smith finishes seventh in long jump

Dallas County High School’s Jamerah Smith finished seventh in the girls 5A long jump in Gulf Shores, earning the Hornets valuable points in the 4A-7A state track meet.
Smith’s jump of 16.02 feet was the highlight of the day for students from the Dallas County area. No other local athletes finished high enough to medal in either the meet in Cullman (1A-3A) or in Gulf Shores (4A-7A).
Here is how local athletes performed at the meet on Friday:
The Dallas County girls 4×100 relay qualified eighth with a time of 51.67 seconds and the Hornets will get to run in the finals.
Dallas County’s Theopolis Smith finished 15th in the 5A boys shot put and 23rd in the boys discus throw.
Ellwood Christian’s Rashni Walker finished 13th in the 1A girls long jump with a total of 13-03.50 feet. Her brother, Malachi Walker, finished 13th in the 1A boys triple jump with a total of 35-06.75 feet and 14th in the 1A 100-meter dash with a time of 56.23 seconds.
Selma’s Keashia Collins finished 13th in the girls 6A 100-meter dash final with a time of 1 minute, 0.98 seconds and 15th in the 200-meter dash with a time of 26.35 seconds.
Selma’s girls 4×100 relay team finished 17th in the preliminary race with a time of 51.90 seconds.
Keith’s Tyeshia Malone finished ninth in the prelims of the 2A 100-meter dash. Malone didn’t qualify for the finals with a time of 13.81 seconds — just .04 behind eighth place qualifier Savanah Long from Sheffield High School. Malone also finished twelfth in qualifying for the girls 400-meter dash, just under two seconds from making the final.
Keith’s Eric Smiley finished 13th in the boys 400-meter dash qualifier, under two seconds from making the final. He finished in a time of 55.09 seconds.
The Keith boys finished ninth in a qualifying attempt to make the 4×100 relay final. Keith ran the race in 47.19 seconds, about three tenths of a second behind eighth place Luverne.
Keith’s Erica Smiley finished 18th in the girls 200-meter dash qualifier and Jeashan Black finished 23rd in the boys 200-meter dash qualifier with a time of 25.56 seconds.
