The Selma Area Food Bank held its first ever bass fishing tournament this weekend at Roland Cooper State Park. As of Monday afternoon, the food bank wasn’t sure how much money it had raised from the event, but executive director Jeff Harrison said it was more than just about fundraising.

Through the tournament, Harrison and the food bank were able to meet new people in Wilcox and other surrounding counties. Some of those people didn’t realize Selma had a food bank, so that’ll help spread the word.

The food bank serves nearly 50 agencies, who help thousands of families each month.

The tournament was a chance for people that enjoy the outdoors to help out an area nonprofit, while also making a difference in the lives of others.

Many dropped by just to give a donation, while others heard the radio broadcast and drove by to check out the tournament.

There were several winners in the adult and high school division, but the food bank was by far the biggest winner of the day.

Due to the success of the tournament, which included 39 boats, the food bank has already scheduled next year’s tournament.

We look forward to it and hope that an even bigger turnout will be there next time.
