Memorial service will still be held this year despite Battle of Selma cancelation

The Battle of Selma won’t take place this year, but a memorial service at Old Cahawba Archaeological Park will still go on.

The service started three years ago and honors the soldiers who died in the Civil War. This service is held as part of the Battle of Selma, so this year it’ll be a little different, but it’s important that it continues.

“We are glad this little bit of the Battle of Selma is going to continue in 2017 until they decide what they are going to do in 2018,” said Old Cahawba site director Linda Derry. “We were very glad to be able to keep that momentum alive for them.”

The service will be held April 22, but the rest of the details are still being ironed out. We’re sure it’ll all come together and be a terrific service, one more than worthy of honoring those who fought on both sides of the war. The service ensures that at least part of the Battle of Selma will be recognized and remembered this year.
