Dorothy Louise Hinton Crawford

Dorothy Louise Hinton Crawford, age 88, of Marion Junction, died Jan. 20, 2017.

Visitation was held Monday, Jan. 23, 2017, at 1 p.m. in the Marion United Methodist Church Sanctuary, followed by services at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Misty Barrett officiating and Kirk Funeral Home directing.

Dot was born to Mary Alice Strong Hinton and George Lycurgus Hinton in rural Tuscaloosa County on a cotton and dairy farm on Aug. 26, 1928.

She received a B.A. degree from Judson College in Marion was the first student to board her horse, Strawberry, on campus. Dot married David L. Crawford in 1949 and made their home in the Hamburg Community of Perry County. She was an active member of the Marion United Methodist Church throughout her life. She served as the first female chairperson of the administrative board, taught Sunday school for 25 years, and was volunteer grounds keeper into her 80s with Bert Jones.

Dot managed Seabed Ranch, a registered Polled Hereford cow-calf operation, while David traveled for Southern United Life Insurance Company. She was supervisor on the Perry/Bibb Agriculture Stabilization and Conservation Service Committee and the Perry/Bibb Farm Service Agency Committee.

She was preceded in death by her daughter, Meg Crawford Truman; her parents; brothers, George Hinton Jr. and James L. Hinton; and sisters, Elon Miller Hamner Mackey and Mary Jean Hinton. Survivors include her husband, David L. Crawford; daughters, Cherry Russell (Donnie), Elon Steinberg (Daryl), Mary Alice Zora and Dolly Demeranville (Hardy); grandchildren, Jana Garner, Mac Russell, Jesse C. Zora, Rayne Osborn, Macon Steinberg, Elon Z. Williams, Crawford Steinberg and Hardy Demeranville IV; eight great-grandchildren; sister, Elizabeth Holman Thomson; sister-in-law, Jean Hinton; and numerous nieces and nephews.

We acknowledge with much gratitude her wonderful caregivers, Bert Jones, Barbara Griffin, Stacie Jackson and Kim Williams.
