Year in review: New headmasters named, lives saved by heroic efforts

TWO DIE IN DOMESTIC VIOLENCE SHOOTING

Two people died in a domestic violence shooting the last day of April. The victims were later identified as Teresa J. Petersen and Marty Joe Ramsey.

STEWART NAMED GIRL OF THE YEAR

Morgan Academy senior Mary Lauren Stewart, daughter of Jon and Shannon Stewart, was named Delta Kappa Gamma’s 2016 Girl of the Year.

MORGAN NAMES NEW

HEADMASTER

Mark Knight, then principal of Jemison Middle School, was named Morgan Academy’s headmaster. He follows Pete Williamson, who resigned in March due to health reasons.

adams NAMED BOY OF THE YEAR

Morgan Academy senior Harrison Adams was named the Paul M. Grist Boy of the Year. He is the son of Bart and Stacy Adams and became the 68th Boy of the Year.

OBAMA SAYS SELMA SPEECH

WAS HIGHLIGHT

In an interview with the New York Times, president Barack Obama said his speech in Selma on the 50th anniversary of Bloody Sunday was one of his all-time favorites.

COUNTY PHONE SYSTEM FRIED

Almost all of the Dallas County County Courthouse and Annex were without voicemail for more than a month after lightning fried the old system.

MAN DIES IN RACETRACK CRASH

A 39-year-old man died after a crash that caused his pickup truck to flip multiple times at the Selma Motorsports Park. The victim was identified as Darren Dwayne Bryant.

ARREST MADE IN MURDER

An arrest was made in a murder less than 24 hours after the shooting. Carloyd De’Edwardd Moss, 21, was charged in connection with the murder of 26-year-old Tavares Serdarro Peasant.

LIFEGUARD SAVES GIRL AT PARTY

A YMCA lifeguard was praised for saving the life of an 8-year-old girl who fell into a pool at a private party in a home. Logan Damoth jumped in and saved the girl who couldn’t swim.

WOMAN DIES AFTER ANT BITES

A Prattville woman died in Selma from an allergic reaction to ant bites the day after her mother died. Originally from Selma, Kalyn Rolan, 29, died shortly after being bit by ants at a relative’s home in Selma.

APPRAISAL PUTS ST. JAMES WORTH AT $900,000

An appraisal from a Chicago company that specializes in the appraisal of hotels put the value of the St. James Hotel at $900,000.

JUMPer SAVED

A Selma Police Department patrol officer successfully prevented a Selma woman from jumping off the Edmund Pettus Bridge. Officer Michael Kiser was responding to a call in Selmont when he observed a vehicle parked in the right hand lane near the crest of the bridge. Kiser said he noticed a woman, dressed in only her underwear, looking over the railing of the bridge.

SHIRLEY NAMED ECA headmaster

Ellwood Christian Academy hired former Selma City Schools superintendent as headmaster.
