Holiday House returns to Walton Theater

Every year Joy Beers has set up shop at the Walton Theater downtown to take part in the annual Holiday House.
It’s a tradition she has taken part in for more than a decade. While she loves selling her jewelry, it’s the people that browse through the hundreds of different items that cover the tables in the shop that she enjoys the most.
“It’s just fun to come see people during the holidays, the people that come in and shop. I get to see a lot of friends,” she said. “I just love seeing the people and helping and selling.”
Beers, who used to make a lot of the items she sold at past Holiday Houses, now brings in jewelry and other items from the Atlanta Gift Market. She said she tries to having a little bit of something for everyone.
“I’ve got jewelry, scarves and Alabama and Auburn stuff,” she said. “I always have things for men too, like coolers, bags and a lot of things like that.”
The shop gives local artists and vendors a chance to show off their work, but it also gives back to the Old Depot Museum.
“Twenty percent of our profits go to supporting the museum. That’s a lot to take out of what you sell, but I’m willing to do it,” she said. “It’s just a great opportunity for us to help support the museum, which is an important part of the community.”
Candi Duncan, who organizes and runs the shop, said the crowd started slow Monday due to heavy rain, but business has picked up over the last couple of days.
Duncan said the shop gives people a lot of options to choose from.
“If you’ve got 25 vendors in here, then that is the potential of going to 25 different stores all in one spot all at one time,” she said. “It’s shopping small because all of the vendors we have this year are from Alabama, and most of them are pretty local. If they’re not in Selma, they’re within 50 miles, and it helps them with their Christmas.”
Denise Rushton, who is selling her homemade jams in the shop, was the food vendor Wednesday, selling baklava. Rushton said taking part in the Holiday House has become a tradition for her whether it is as a vendor or a shopper.
“I’ve already got a lot of stuff picked out,” she said. “There’s a lot of crafts and just pretty things like enamel ware and the art. I come here even if I wasn’t in it.”
The Holiday House is open each day from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and will be open through Dec. 17. The shop will be open later on movie nights depending on the length of the movie.
